DESCRIPTION
Punta Sur, Cozumel’s ecological park and nature preserve, encompasses a
region known as the Colombia lagoon with a unique environment of
mangrove jungles, white-sand beaches and reef formations housing an
abundant and diverse fish population.
LOCATION
Situated at the southern tip of Cozumel, the park covers more than 247
acres of the island.
ACTIVITIES
The park offers a variety of activities including a catamaran tour, a
snorkeling center to observe the colorful marine life and turtles, and a
historic lighthouse that has been transformed into an impressive museum
educating visitors about the history of maritime exploration. The exhibit at
the Punta Celarain lighthouse, chronicles seamanship evolution from the
early Maya to modern times. Also at Punta Sur is the El Caracol, a wellpreserved
ancient Maya structure that was used as an early hurricane
warning system.
The reserve provides transportation through the park and bilingual guides
are available at the visitor information center. Individuals can also take a
free-guided tour through the mangroves and ecological preserve via a
catamaran.
A snack bar, handicrafts, and souvenir store can be found near the
information center. At the park’s beach visitors will find a recreational area
with palapa umbrellas for shade, kayaks, and volleyball nets.
COST
Admission is $10 per person. Children under the age of 8 are free.
HOURS
Open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
BACKGROUND
Punta Sur took more than three years and $1.5 million USD to create and
open in August 1999. The park promotes the conservation of the island’s
natural flora and fauna.
