COZUMEL’S ANNUAL CARNAVAL FESTIVITIES

SET TO BEGIN MARCH 2

Pre-carnaval activities are under way promising this year’s over 100-year-old celebration to be the best yet

COZUMEL, Mexico (March 1 2011) – The Island of Cozumel is gearing up for its traditional Carnaval celebration with elaborate parades and costumes, festive music and dancing, authentic and delectable food, and plenty of family fun and entertainment for all to enjoy. This year’s weeklong festivities showcasing Cozumel’s rich cultural heritage will take place throughout the island March 2 through March 9.

The inhabitants of Cozumel have celebrated the pre-Lenten festival of Carnaval for over a century by adding colorful motifs, vibrant music and ethnic dancers into a celebration full of excitement that adorns the streets and homes of the entire island. The Carnaval celebration is a way for the residents of Cozumel to honor their past while sharing their rich history with visitors from all over the world.

The week starts off with the crowning of the Carnival King and Queen at Quintana Roo Park, followed by one of many dance and costume contests. It continues with two colorful parades during the week showcasing glittering costumes, elaborate floats and magnificent dance groups competing to the rhythms of vibrant island music, which all leads up to the great and final parade where visitors are showered with gifts. The celebration closes with the most spectacular concert followed by an awards ceremony and the traditional burning of Juan Carnaval at Benito Juarez Park.

Cozumel’s Carnaval is unlike any other, with a variety of costumed characters, colorful floats, nightly street fairs with traditional foods and concerts, and surprising spectacles throughout the streets of downtown San Miguel. People of all ages are encouraged to participate in the unforgettable fun and culture by wearing masks and native costumes including visitors who are invited to dress up and participate in one of the oldest traditions in the Yucatan Peninsula.
