DESCRIPTION
Encompassing nearly 450,000 square feet, Chankanaab National Park is
located within the Cozumel Reefs National Marine Park. Chankanaab, a
Mayan word meaning “Little Sea”, is home to the world-renowned
Chankanaab Lagoon, which features the only inland coral reef formation in
the world. To help preserve the environment, swimming is not permitted in the
lagoon. Chankanaab Park also encompasses a natural aquarium with more
than 60 species of tropical fish, crustaceans and corals.
LOCATION
Just south of Cozumel downtown.
ACTIVITIES
Dolphin Discovery – here visitors can experience up-close encounters with
dolphins and choose from several different interactive dolphin programs.
Participants can share a handshake and kiss with a dolphin or enjoy a thrilling
swim with the beloved marine mammal. Each encounter includes a 30-minute
educational program.
Maya Zone - visitors can tour a modern-day reproduction of a Maya village
and learn about the ancient culture’s building and farming practices.
Chankanaab Reef - A popular dive site, the reef is renowned for its trees of
black coral and great mounds of coral, called “Bolones.” At a depth of 60 to
70 feet, these formations rise from the white sea bed to a height of 25 feet.
Enormous yellow sponges, gorgonian fans, and anemones hang from the
interior wall of the lagoon, and schools of brightly colored fish dart through the
aquamarine waters providing scuba divers and snorkelers with an everchanging
underwater panorama.
Underwater Adventures - snorkeling and scuba diving opportunities are
offered along with instruction from expert scuba divers. Certification courses
are available. Visitors can also experience the thrill of scuba diving without
getting certified. Two exciting activities, Snuba and Sea Trek, provide
opportunities for visitors to view underwater life without surfacing for air. The
park has changing facilities and four dive shops in the area that provide
equipment rentals, guides and instruction.
Lunch - Two full-service restaurants are located within the park, El Bucanero
and La Laguna.
