It's True! There is a place about an hour and thirty minutes from Cancun Mexico in the Sian Ka'an Reserve where you are allowed to "hunt" crocodile and participate in important conservation research. This is a very unique opportunity and if you are interested in conservation, an experience you will cherish for many years.
This is an ongoing, long term project and therefore very expensive. By allowing interested, nature-oriented people to tour and help gather data, alot of money is raised to aid in the continuance of this ongoing project, as well as raising conservation awareness.
Experienced biologists conduct the tours and explain many things including crocodile biology, the status of it's populations and current issues the crocodiles are facing. You will get to see and participate in the capturing of the crocodile and the gathering of data. ie. weight, measurements etc.
Two crocodile species can be found in the reserve. One is the Morelet's (Crocodylus moreletii) and the other, American (Crocodylus acutus)
Young crocodiles are 8 to 10 inches long when they hatch and adult crocodiles are 7 to 15 feet long weighing between 150 to 450 pounds. The American crocodile can be found in southern Florida, the Caribbean, southern Mexico, and along the Central American coast south to Venezuela.
The crocodile tour takes place at night just after sunset and it's duration varies due to the fact that these wild animals cannot be predicted. (The tour usually lasts roughly 3 to 4 hours) One thing is for sure, it is an exciting experience. One not to be missed during your Cancun vacation.
