Acapulco Beaches

Primarily known as a spring break destination for students looking to smother all signs of stress for a few days, Acapulco isn’t always just a playground for pre-adults. Depending on the time of year and the way you plan things, a trip to Acapulco can be relaxing, refreshing, or as raucous as you want.

Undeniably lovely beaches serve as the primer for what will surely be a satisfying getaway. There’s a reason that millions of people visit Acapulco every year, and spring break festivities and mundane bar food are not the primary draws. For thousands of years, yes thousands, Acapulco has been an active seaport and busy place to be. From the Nahua Indians, who founded this city, to Cortez, who helped to make it an important trading post, this privileged piece of land along Mexico’s Pacific coast has been attracting people from all over the world.

The main boulevard is where it’s at, and is referred to as “La Costera.” As you look out over the bay from this vantage point, it will be easy to see why Acapulco made its way to the top of so many travelers’ lists. Many of the beaches are well kept and surprisingly picturesque, including Icacos, Hornos, Caleta and Condesa. As opposed to some college student tromping grounds, these swaths of sand are pretty sweet.

Another beach located off the main thoroughfare of hotels and foot traffic is Playa Revolcadero. The water here can be a bit rougher as this beach is not protected by the bay, so be careful of strong currents, waves and tides. Spending some time here will be a nice change, however, so enjoy the scenic drive and the feeling of escaping the crowds for a bit.

Several Acapulco hotspots can be recommended, including Zocalo. This is essentially the town square, and is the place to experience a more authentic taste of the local culture. It would be helpful to know Spanish if you’d care to order enchiladas without advertising your status as a tourist, but you’ll probably be able to get by just fine no matter what. The prices are reasonable here, and as you walk around you’ll feel like you truly are in another country. Hint: don’t miss Acapulco’s Cathedral as you wander the streets of Zocalo.

You may have heard of another one of Acapulco’s jewels, the La Quebrada Cliff Divers. Since 1934, daredevils have been plunging into the shallow waters at the base of these cliffs in impressive feats of athleticism and skill. Tourists gather to take in this awesome sight, and without a glimpse of this phenomenon, you’ll feel that something is missing from your trip to Acapulco.

As you would expect, there are many restaurants and watering holes to take care of your eating and drinking needs. They range from American-style chains to bona fide Mexican establishments, many with views of the cliff divers and sunsets over the beach. Certain places attract the young imbibers while others offer a more low-key vibe, so take a look around and follow your instincts. There’s something to please everyone here, from beer-chuggers to wine-sippers.

So whether you like to dance the night away, take long walks on the beach, explore the rougher terrain, or kick back and work on your tan, Acapulco will have something to offer you. Hotel choices are abundant, but remember that vacation rentals also make a great option. Reserve yourself a beach condo where noisy neighbors and late night disturbances will be non-issues, and space to breathe will allow you and your traveling companions to enjoy each other’s company without having to step on one another’s toes.

Acapulco aims to please, so for a trip that will surely provide the sights, sounds, and savory memories that you’re looking to acquire during a much-needed break from the usual, start planning your escape today. Go online to peruse the Acapulco vacation rentals and prepare to say Adios to the drone of daily life.
